Urban Ecology
Links :: What is Urban Ecology
According
to the Urban Ecology Institute, “Urban ecology is a new
branch of environmental studies that seeks to understand the natural
systems of urban areas and the threats that face them. Urban ecologists
study the trees, rivers, wildlife and open spaces found in cities to
understand the extent of those resources and the way they are affected by
pollution, over-development and other pressures."
Urban
Ecology is also the focus of the seminar for which I am undertaking this
research. Titled "Urban Nature and City Design," the course was
offered jointly by MIT’s Department of Architecture and MIT's
Department of Urban Studies and Planning. With this in mind, my
understanding of urban ecology throughout this website includes any
projects or writings that incorporate science-specific technologies or
knowledge into the planning and design processes.
