Pollution
Chemicals
Water runs off of grass very rapidly and into sewage systems and runoff
basin. Thus, the chemicals that are applied to many lawns, including
fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, are often transmitted directly
from the lawn into a city's water system, often resulting in the
contamination of local creeks and rivers.
Emissions
Lawn mower engines produce different pollutants that are harmful to the
environment, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's), ozone
precursers, and carbon monoxide. An EPA study has shown that 9% of certain
air pollutants nationwide come from lawn equipment engines.4
