Office parks consume large areas of land. The office park complex
presents a larger scale of development to the mostly residential fabric of
a typical suburb. They are a typically low-density building type, so
in addition to large overall ownership, there are usually significant
expanses of open space between individual buildings. A problem faced
by (sub)urbanized areas is that of ecological fragmentation caused by the
spread of a certain density of development in an area and individualized
ownership of properties. Ecological fragmentation is the condition
that describes the isolation of natural systems and wildlife
corridors. However, because of the expansive open land that office
parks occupy, they present an opportunity to create ecological connections
and larger, more beneficial
fragments within their territories.
