Photovoltaic Solar Energy Systems

Syllabus

Course Meeting Times

Lectures: 1 session / week, 2 hours / session

Topics

We will study the behavior of photovoltaic solar energy systems, focusing on the behavior of “stand-alone” systems. Students, by the end of this 6 hour course, will be able to do a first order, conceptual design of a stand-alone system for a location anywhere in the US. This will include estimation of costs and benefits, taking into account any available government subsidies. Introduction to the hardware elements and their behavior.

Many web sites will be referenced and data downloaded for use in exercises.

Grading

A semester long project, which progressively builds on a set of exercises, will count 80%. In class participation will count 50%. There is no final exam.
