Introduction to Climate and Environmental Justice (PDF) (PPTX)

This module is broken into four parts. Parts 1 and 2 introduce environmental and climate justice. Part 3 provides five case studies from the environmental/climate justice movements. Part 4 provides four different project or assignment options. This module could be broken into 3 to 4 class sessions or could be used for an entire unit.

Climate Justice Policy (PDF) (PPTX)

This module discusses current climate and environmental justice policy in the US and in international law, including the Paris Agreement and the Green New Deal.

Mapping Environmental Justice (PDF) (PPTX)

This module uses mapping to explore issues of environmental justice. It is divided into three parts. Parts 1 and 2 focus introducing and exploring features from the EJAtlas and EJScreen tools. Part 3 provides assignments and projects for applying concepts from this module in future study.

Mapping Environmental Justice 2.0 (PDF) (PPTX)

This module is in three parts. Part 1 focuses on how environmental data is collected and structured to build indices: what gets counted, and what’s left out? Part 2 examines how index design and mapping choices shape accessibility, legibility, and narrative. Part 3 explores the limits of these tools, and provides an activity that brings students either in conversation with each other, or outside, to talk about how they experience place.

Mining and Climate Justice Case Studies (PDF) (PPTX)

This module focuses on the question of ethical and just resource extraction, and discusses the importance of mined materials in our daily lives. It utilizes case studies from MIT researchers and scientific articles.

Climate Justice and Democracy (PDF) (PPTX)

This module consists of five parts that introduce the connection between democracy and climate justice, consider the link between climate justice and voter suppression, explore the effects of the polluter-industrial complex on climate justice, offer solutions, and provide additional resources and project options.

The Emotions of Climate Justice (PDF) (PPTX)

This module demonstrates the many emotional responses elicited by climate change and climate justice, and asks students to reflect on their experiences.

Energy Justice (PDF) (PPTX)

This module includes content from energy justice activists, policy makers, scientists, community organizations, and other individuals. The module contains an introduction to energy justice, an overview of the US energy system, special topics in energy justice, perspectives on energy justice, energy justice conflict, and information on the Just Transition.

Global Climate Justice (PDF) (PPTX)

This module introduces foundational components, dilemmas, and debates surrounding global climate justice. Students have the opportunity to see many examples through interactive case studies and activities with resources from BBC, MIT, TED.com, and more.

Indigenous Climate Action (PDF) (PPTX)

This module discusses climate justice, climate change, Indigenous practices, and the fight for climate equity. The module focuses on a case study of the Metlakatla Indian Community of Alaska’s climate action and adaptations.
